QCC:
The Crow made his way down the dark tunnel, a blindfold tied
around his eyes as Riyadha led him down into the depths of her
secret brewery - it had been a lot of fun being spun in circles,
too, but he was glad when he was finally able to see again.
Chirping softly, he rubbed at his eyes and glanced around with a
grin, polishing up his QCC Merchant Interviewer badge and glancing
over his shoulder at Riya.
"Quoa, who would have thought you had a secret base for your
brewery! It's so mysterious! I promise not
to keep you busy for too long, I've just got a few questions for
you," pulling a scroll of paper from his pocket. The end of it
fell to the ground and bounced against the floor, rolling off
under a shelf, unraveling as it went. Cough.
Riyadha:
One could never be too careful when it came the guarding of secret
recipes, and Riyadha was convinced that everyone wanted to get
their hands on the secret of the Wicked Green Ale. Either that or
if they ever found out what really went into it, they would never
try another drop. The removal of Madje's blind fold revealed a
brightly lit room with the usual brewing equipment one might
expect to find in such and establishment. There were vats and
barrels and tubes and grinding wheels and a suspicious lack of
employees. Did Riyadha do all the work herself, or were they
simply gone for the night?
"I need a secret base to keep it safe. People would kill for a
glimpse of the inner sanctuary. You guard this knowledge well,"
jabbing a finger at him. "Now go ahead with your questions."
QCC:
"I don't think I want to know how many people died trying to find
it!"
Madje laughed and stood where he was, scratching at his chin and
glancing around a little nervously - maybe she'd do something bad
if he so much as glimpsed her secret ingredients! Coughing again,
he wound his scroll back up casually and continued, "Well, then,
I'll start at the beginning! How long have you had Wicked Green
Ale up and running? It's really got quite a remarkable
reputation!"
Riyadha:
"Thousands," she answered solemnly. Since the secret ingredients
were kept locked away in another secret room, she felt comfortable
showing her little Brother around the room. Ushering him toward a
row of barrels stacked along the well, she gave the curved wood an
affectionate pat. "It is difficult to remember exactly, but I
would say about... seven or eight years. I started it up during
my stay in Capria."
QCC:
"Au! That's such a long time, I was barely a juvenile fledgling
when you started it up," he snickered as she showed him around the
room, peeking at the various machines and brewing objects - some
of it really smelled, well, like a brewery. Plunking himself down
on one of the barrels, he started up again.
"So, inquiring minds want to know - is WGA really made of used
boots? And if so, is that why you have your boot shop, Footwear
Galore? There are rumors that the footwear you offer in your shop
didn't make the cut for the high quality mark that you put on your
Ale - does that have any truth to it? Honestly, I mean,
everything you offer in your shop looks really great to me!"
Riyadha:
Riyadha peered at one of the dials, adjust a knob, wiggled a
wooden lever a bit, then gave a satisfied nod. Only one of the
machines was running so the amount of noise was not remarkable,
but they still had to raise their voices above the din.
"Ah, the ingredient question. Are you sure you really want to
know?" She flashed him a wicked grin over the curve of one
shoulder. "Yes, there are boots in the ale. Along with human
livers and goblin slime. That's how we get the viscous green
texture." Her
tone was still completely serious, and it was difficult to tell if
she were joking or not. "The boots that go to Footwear Galore are
different. Some I just liked too much too throw into the ale.
Like an old pair of Rap's boots that I saved for a special
occasion. The others are specially made to fit the buyer's foot.
I do actually pay a cobbler to keep the stock up to date."
QCC:
And that was when Madje slipped caaaarefully off the barrel he was
sitting on and went to stand in the middle of the room where he
was safe, relatively speaking. Twitching just a little, he
sniffed at the air - as if he could smell anything over the
overwhelming scent of fermenting ingredients.
"Auuu, I could see why you wouldn't throw in a pair that you liked
too much, though," nodding sagely, he glanced around again to see
if there was any sign of footwear around - alas, he found nothing.
"Thank goodness
you work with a cobbler, because otherwise I might be afraid to
find a dagger or something in the boots! That's not to say that
boots wouldn't be a nifty place to hide daggers, that is. Do you
ever do custom work? How do you go about picking out the shoes
and boots you offer in your shop? I received boots from you a
while back, and they were really nice, very soft!"
Riyadha:
She was more or less oblivious to any discomfort Madje might be
showing at the mention of certain ingredients. Riyadha said a lot
of different things about what went into the ale, but the only
people who knew for sure were her and her heir. And possibly any
workers she had on payroll. With hands planted on her hips, she
moved to join her Brother in the center of the room as the topic
remained with boots.
"I am not skilled enough, nor do I have the time, to make boots
myself. The cobbler I work with
is an elderly gentleman who has been in the business a long time
and crafts very durable footwear. He often does custom work, and
it helps if the buyer has a clear idea of what special
arrangements they would like. For example, you could ask for
sheathes built into the sides of the boot. I pick out items
mostly based on practicality and comfort. You want the boot to
fit well, and last a long time. We use leather and sheepskin
because it molds to the wearer. We also provide a number of
sandals."
QCC:
Wicked Green Ale, as far as he knew, didn't taste like liver,
goblins, or boots - but then he'd only had a sip before Aou'me had
given him one of those, 'I wouldn't do that if I were you,'
looks. It wasn't that he didn't like liver, or even biting on
leather, but...His attention snapped back toward Riya as he
snickered softly and tried to wipe his goofy smile off his face.
"I'm glad he's so accommodating to everyone's individual desires,
it really does ensure that the boots will last longer if they wear right
in the first place! What happens if the sole wears out after the
passage of years? Do you provide that the soles can be replaced,
or should they just buy a new pair? I know a lot of people love
their footwear after it's become all nice and soft, broken-in, and
moulded to their feet and calves - but they just want to replace
the sole, is that possible too?"
Riyadha:
"It is possible to just replace the sole if someone has had the
boot a reasonable amount of time, but I would not recommend it.
The instep also needs to be molded to the foot for proper comfort
and support, and if a person is given a hard sole but the rest of
the boot is worn, then they might not have the proper support
while wearing the new portion in. Does that make sense? Buying
footwear is a solid investment. Improper boot usage can lead to
back and leg pain. It is not so bad to hand over a few
coins every few years to insure a healthy body. And besides that,
I need to stay in business somehow." Riyadha flashed Madje a
cheerful grin, then dropped into a crouch to examine what he had
covering is feet at the moment. Fingers prodded at the toe,
plucked at the lacings, and felt the thickness of the leather
where it ended against his skin. "These are holding up well.
They smell a little, however."
QCC:
"Au," the Crow breathed quietly, nodding again with newfound
understanding, "I had no idea there was so much to know about feet
and footwear, that's really amazing and good information to know!"
Lifting one of his feet up, he was actually wearing #8 knee-high
boots in black from her shop, which had been gifted to him - they
were wearing quite nicely, and he'd had the circumference of the
leather taken in a little to accommodate his chicken legs.
"Which are your favorite boots to sell, what are your customer's
favorites that you sell a lot of the time? Would you ever think
about selling fuzzy slipper types for bed? I think those would be
nice, too! Just something to shuffle around in before bed lined
with fleece...And are there different boots or shoes that you'd
recommend for different people, or is there one kind that you'd
recommend over the others? The sandals must be nice for warmer
weather too!"
Riyadha:
Her chin dipped in a sage nod to accompany her parting
information. Given her certain and well documented boot...
obsession..., it was not so unusual that she knew quite a bit
about footwear and its benefits. Most people could chatter on and
on about a subject they loved.
"I am not sure I have a 'favorite' boot to sell. I am fond of the
knee high deerskin boots without fringe because they are simple,
comfortable, and practical. If you are looking for a solid pair
of boots, those are the way to go. A customer favorite has been
the sheepskin boots with fleece lining. Those were especially
popular during the winter. They are comfortable and warm, but
lack the same support as some of the other boots since there are
no lacings to bind them tight around the calf and ankle. I
suppose they are almost like slippers, but with better traction.
I would definitely recommend different boots for different
people. There are some boots that are better designed for a man's
legs than a woman's, for instance. Also choosing
the right footwear depends largely on what you need it for. Are
you going to be riding, hiking, sailing, fighting? You get the
picture. The boots you are wearing are excellent for riding
because the top half folds up to protect the thigh, but if you
were hiking then you might have chaffing between your legs. The
sandals are perfect for the warmer weather and come in several
different styles, some more fancy than others. So start stocking
up for summer now!"
QCC:
It was really amazing hearing Riya speaking so much in one
sitting, Madje was a bit dumbfounded by the amount she was
offering up. The bright smile still on his face, he jotted down
notes about all the tips for choosing appropriate footwear for
himself and puffed up just a little hearing more about his own
boots.
"Those knee-high deerskin boots certainly do look comfortable and
efficient, as well as practical! They're also probably really
quiet for all the skulking around you do while you're nabbing
people's boots, ay?"
Snickering softly, he wiggled his toes about in his boots and
smiled, "I do do a lot of riding, and in fact, I do fold up the
hem to keep from chaffing! I thought it was just a coincidence,
but quoa! Someone's brilliant! Sandals do sound nice for summer,
I think I'll have to look through your wares again and pick myself
out a few pairs - Gods knows it's better than going about
barefoot, I can't tell you how many times I've stepped on nasty
things this spring."
Scrunching up his nose a little, he flashed her a grin and glanced
down his list again, "Do you have anything else you'd like to add
that people should know about Footwear Galore?"
Riyadha:
Oddly enough, she did not seem uncomfortable with the amount she
was adding to the conversation. Maybe the secret to getting
Riyadha to talk was simply to ask about boots and off she would
go, like a racehorse at the gates. It was clear that she felt as
though she were educating her Brother, and therefore the public at
large, and the importance of her issue might have contributed to
her lecturing.
"They are very quiet, yes, but I do not skulk! I am simply
crafty." She gave a firm nod, lips pressed
together in a straight line. Was it her fault that people left
their boots sitting out during grape stomps, or that she won them
in spars? All opportunities had to be taken to insure the legacy
of Wicked Green Ale lived on.
"Originally I was just going to sell boots, but watching my sister
go around barefoot all the time made me decide to do sandals as
well. I felt like people needed a different alternative to going
barefoot in public, and boots are not always practical. The
sandals we sell are generally designed for both men and women,
though we do have one or two styles that are for women only. The
Grecian style sandals with the heels were designed with a certain
long pair of legs in mind.... Anyway, the only thing I would like
to add is that people should buy more shoes so they can drink more
ale." She was readying Madje's blindfold again, prepared to
remove him in the same top secret manner that he had been brought
down. Sure, he was a trustworthy little Crow, but he could be
tortured to give up the location!
QCC:
"Ta, I'm still getting used to wearing anything on my feet at all,
but the certain scolding from a certain Sister of mine," he
coughed softly, "convinced me that I shouldn't be walking around
barefoot or I'd catch a cold. A certain pair of long legs, ay?"
Glancing down at his legs, he grinned and flicked his wrist at her
and laughed again, "I'm flattered! But yes, more shoes and more
ale! All right, those are all the questions I have for you
tonight, thank you so much for being a part of the Merchant
Spotlight, Riya! I'm certain you've enlightened a lot of people
on the important necessities of wearing proper footwear!"
Bowing his head down so she could affix the blindfold again, he
snickered and tucked his scroll away back into a pocket before she
lead him out again. They could try to torture him, but this way
they certainly wouldn't be able to get anything out of him!
